Garage door springs do the heavy lifting so your opener doesn’t have to. Torsion springs above the door or extension springs on the sides store massive mechanical energy. Rust, temperature shifts, and wear weaken the metal over time. Eventually, the steel reaches its breaking point. This is not a minor glitch; it is a critical mechanical failure. You must act immediately to prevent the door from becoming a safety hazard.

1. The Door Refuses to Lift More Than Six Inches

Modern openers have safety sensors and force-detection settings. When a spring breaks, the door suddenly weighs its full 150 to 300 pounds. Your opener recognizes it cannot safely lift this load and shuts down. If the door jerks up and then stops or reverses, you likely have a snapped coil.

2. Visible Gaps in the Coil

You don’t need to be a mechanic to spot a failed spring. Look at the metal shaft above your closed garage door for a continuous coil. If you see a two-to-three-inch gap, the spring has snapped into two pieces. This gap is the “smoking gun” of spring failure. You may also see metal cables hanging loosely from the drums since the tension is gone.

3. A Distorted or Crooked Door Path

Sometimes only one spring in a pair snaps. In these cases, the door might still move, but it will do so unevenly. One side moves faster, causing the panels to tilt or wedge against the tracks. This creates a high risk of the door falling out of the tracks. If your door looks lopsided or makes grinding noises, the remaining parts are overcompensating for the failed hardware.
